A small, quiet portable instrument was developed to measure nitrogen dioxide211u001e(NO2) and nitrous acid (HONO) in indoor air. The instrument is a fully self-211u001econtained continuous monitor, based on a miniature commercial electrochemical 211u001ecell that responds to both NO2 and HONO. The monitor was tested in the 211u001elaboratory, in test chambers, in a research house, and in three occupied homes 211u001eand one business. The monitor provides simultaneous measurements of NO2 and HONO 211u001ewith a time response of two minutes. The accuracy of the monitor with new 211u001eelectrochemical sensors, relative to a conventional measurement method, was 10 to 211u001e20 percent in a variety of studies. The main limitation of the monitor is a 211u001egradual loss of sensitivity of the sensor.
