This report is one of a series detailing the results of the CAL/APT program, a211u001eresearch effort being performed jointly by the University of California, 211u001eBerkeley, Pavement Research Center and the California Department of 211u001eTransportation (Caltrans). It contains an evaluation of the performance of 211u001easphalt treated permeable base (ATPB) in asphalt concrete pavements. The 211u001eevaluation is based on observation, laboratory testing of ATPB, and computer 211u001esimulation of representative pavement structures. The evaluation includes: (1) a 211u001esummary of Caltrans experience with ATPB and drainage systems relative to their 211u001edevelopment and implementation, together with observation of field performance 211u001ewith respect to maintainability and stripping of asphalt treated materials; (2) a 211u001esummary of the characteristics and performance of ATPB materials and drainage 211u001esystems used by two other highway agencies; (3) results of laboratory 211u001einvestigation of the stiffness and permanent deformation characteristics of ATPB 211u001emixes, including the effects of soaking and loading while saturated; and (4) the 211u001eresults of analyses of representative pavement structures to quantify the 211u001eexpected effect of as-compacted and soaked ATPB on pavement performance.
