Moving into Economic Development: CDCs and Job Creation

Community development corporations (CDCs) are moving into an era in which job211u001ecreation is becoming more and more an integral part of their fundamental mission. 211u001eCDCs need to know what works and what doesn't as they initiate economic 211u001edevelopment projects for the first time. NCCED recognized the information gap 211u001ethat existed for CDCs in making the transition from a strictly community 211u001edevelopment orientation focused on housing to include economic development and 211u001ejob creation. In 1996, EDA awarded NCCED a grant to provide technical assistance 211u001eto four CDCs to develop job creation projects and to disseminate the lessons 211u001elearned. The four were selected based on project and geographic diversity: 211u001eFlorence Villa CDC of Winter Haven, Florida: Sunnyside-Up of Houston, Texas; 211u001eCabrillo Economic Development Corp. of Saticoy, California; and North Capital 211u001eNeighborhood Development of Washington, D.C. This report describes the 211u001eexperiences of those four CDCs, as well as of other CDCs that have completed 211u001eeconomic development projects. It also provides information on resources for 211u001eeconomic development projects.
