Evaluation of Endotracheal Tube Fixation Methods

Insertion and maintenance of oral endotracheal tubes (ETT) is one of the most common procedures in critical care units. Data are lacking on the most effective method of securing these tubes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide evidence-based information for critical care nurses to use when planning care for patients with an ETT. The specific aims were to compare two methods for securing an ETT, adhesive tape, or a tube fixation device, for differences in (a) tube stability, (b) facial skin integrity, (c) oral mucosal integrity, (d) patient comfort, (e) family distress at first visit after intubation, (f) nurse satisfaction with tube stability, (g) nurse satisfaction with ability to render care, and (h) cost.
