摘要

In 2000, the Federal Transit Administration's International Mass TransportationProgram (IMTP), an element of the Office of Research, Demonstration, and Innovation, continued the strong momentum begun since its launching on September 15, 1999. The IMTP's official roll-out took place at a meeting in Washington attended by representatives of the U.S. transit industry, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Export-Import Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, The American Public Transportation Association (APTA), and various foreign embassies. Speakers emphasized the key role that mass transit can play in furthering economic growth and sound environmental goals in both development and developing countries, and discussed ways in which the IMTP can collaborate with other international entities in this area. U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Mortimer L. Downey, keynote speaker at the event, recalled the progression of the American transit industry over the past few decades from a fledgling domestic sector to a major international player, particularly in the design/build and turnkey services area.
