Numerical investigation of the buoyancy flows in the slag layer is carried out. The heat loss from the slag surface by both convection and radiation is taken into account. The electrodes are systematically changed to examine their effect on the flows in the slag. For the cases considered, the slag flow is dominated by the heat loss from the slag surface and the electrode temperature. Heat loss from the slag surface is caused mainly by radiation and convection heat loss only accounts for about 10%. The results obtained from buoyancy-induced flow and heat transfer may provide some useful information for magnetodydrodynamics flows when the Lorentz forces can be neglected at large electrode diameter.
