The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) received a petitionto conduct a public health assessment of the Boise Cascade Corporation Plywood Plant (BCCPP) in Kettle Falls, Washington. Residents are concerned about manganese exposure associated with BCCPP site include (1) manganese reportedly seeping from a wastewater lagoon into groundwater, and (2) manganese releases into the ambient air through BCCPP's veneer dryers. In response to community concern, ATSDR evaluated whether residents are being exposed to unsafe levels of manganese in either ambient air, drinking water, or both. ATSDR also reviewed existing data on contaminants in soil, sediment, and surface water to evaluate whether reported health concerns could be associated with other exposures in the Kettle Falls area.
