Re-Establishing Native Brook Trout Communities in Wisconsin Streams. Study SSDX

Complete removal of exotic brown trout using electro fishing gear was attempted in an effort to re-establish native brook trout communities in two Wisconsin streams. Successful removal of all brown trout in 1.9 miles of Seas Branch Creek was accomplished in 2.5 years following six, 2-pass electro fishing surveys (surveys made each fall and spring) and complete drainage and removal of brown trout from a 11-acre impoundment on the lower end. Under catch-and-release angling only, a single re-introduction of 495 mature brook trout successfully reproduced and established a wild population of 1,476/mile within three years. Total removal of brown trout from 5.3 miles of the Pine River was unsuccessful within the 3-year study period because of an inability to remove all brown trout from a 17-acre millpond at the lower end of the study area.
