TS-5 Central Area and Craners Cultural Resources Inventory Utah Test and Training Range, Tooele and Box Elder Counties, Utah

Historical Research Associates conducted a cultural resources inventory of the TS-5 Central Area and Craners project areas, Utah Test and Training Range, Tooele and Box Elder Counties, Utah, in June and July 2000. At the request of the NPS and Hill AFB, this work is in response to proposed 388th Fighter Wing target and training area developments and operations. The TS-5 Central Area encompasses a 3,955-acre area previously inventoried in 1996. The Craners project area is 4,816 acres on the playa-margin dunes and uplands at the southern tip of the Newfoundland Mountain Range. Recorded were 35 prehistoric sites within TS-5 Central Area (16 recommended NRHP-eligible), and 17 prehistoric (10 recommended NRHP-eligible) and 6 historical sites (non NRHP-eligible) in the Craners area. Half (49%) of the TS-5 sites contain Western Stemmed projectile points dating to the Bonneville period (between 11,000 to 9,500 B.P.). At Craners, prehistoric resources post-date 6,000 B.P., while historical sites represent only small campsites and trash scatters that post-date the 1900s.
