The Marine Safety Laboratory (MSL), under the auspices of the National Maritime Center, is the Coast Guards forensic laboratory for oil pollution. Samples collected by field units are analyzed at MSL to determine if a relationship exists between the spilled oil sample(s) and suspected source samples. The ensuing report is then used in both helping to identify the responsible party and recovering costs.
