摘要

Subjective assessments of health status often differ by race/ethnicity but inadequately controlled covariates may have biased results in prior studies. We used demographic, socioeconomic, health behavior, physical functioning, and psychosocial factors to examine (1) how factors contribute to explaining self-reported overall health (SROH) differences between groups; (2) whether observed relationships differed by sex; (3) whether results varied using different techniques; and (4) whether SROH has the same predictive value for (a) physician visits, and (b) hospitalization across the groups. The 1992 wave of the Health and Retirement Study was used to analyze data on 7169 white, 490 English-speaking Hispanics, 405 Spanish-speaking Hispanics, and 1652 black respondents.
