In the Eastern Gulf of Mexico (EGOM), Sale 197 was the third lease offering in the area originally offered in Sale 181 in 2001. Available for leasing in this sale were the remaining 124 blocks in the Sale area that did not receive bids in 2003s Sale 189. In this sale, 12 tracts received one bid each, all of the tracts were in water depths of 1,600 meters or more, and these tracts were eligible for 12 million barrels-oil equivalent (MMBOE) of royalty relief.
