Community legislation, concerning food treated with ionising radiation, states that any food or food ingredients, authorised in the European Union, must be labelled with the word irradiated and that every year each Member State has to carry out checks at the product marketing stage to enforce correct labelling. The results of controls, published from the Commission on food irradiation, show that most products, found irradiated and not labelled, are herbs, spices and herbal supplements. Until now no analytical checks on irradiated food have been carried out in our country. The Istituto Superiore di Sanita (the National Institute of Health in Italy), in accordance with the Ministry of Health, performed an analytical survey on the importing of spices and herbs, including herbs used in dietary supplements, to investigate the entry in our country of irradiated raw materials. The current report shows the results of the checks and the detailed description of the analytical methods used.
