U.S. domestic manufacturing plants used an estimated 70 percent (+ or - 1 percent) of their full production capacity for the fourth quarter of 2006 and 71 percent (+ or - 1 percent) for the fourth quarter of 2005. The durable goods industries fourth quarter 2006 rate of 69 percent (+ or - 1 percent) was similar to the rate of 71 percent (+ or - 1 percent) observed for the nondurable goods industries. Durable goods industries are manufacturing industries in which products have a normal life expectancy of 3 years or more. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) subsectors 321, 327, 331, 332, 333, 334, 335, 336, 337, and 339 are considered durable goods industries. Nondurable goods industries are manufacturing industries in which products generally have a life expectancy of less than 3 years. NAICS subsectors 311, 312, 313, 314, 315, 316, 322, 323, 324, 325, and 326 are nondurables goods industries. The advanced processing industries fourth quarter rate of 68 percent (+ or - 1 percent) was lower than the rate of 72 percent (+ or - 1 percent) estimated for primary processing industries. Primary processing industries are industries in which products are generally the first processed output of raw materials in the manufacturing process. NAICS subsectors 313, 314, 321, 322, 324, 326, 327, and 331 are classified as the primary processing industries. Advanced processing industries are industries in which products are considered finished manufactured items. NAICS subsectors 311, 312, 315, 316, 323, 333, 334, 335, 336, 337, and 339 are advanced processing industries.
