The current research study sought to understand how activation may add to an individuals functional recovery after surgery for lumbar spine disease. Patient activation is an aggregate concept encompassing broad areas of beliefs, motivation, locus of control, and self-efficacy. It was hypothesized that, all other things being equal, differences in the level of activation across individuals would influence post-operative functional recovery. This influence may occur, in part, through mediation of health behaviors.
