Preliminary Volcano-Hazard Assessment for Gareloi Volcano, Gareloi Island, Alaska

In this report, we describe our current understanding of the hazards associated with Gareloi Volcano. The term hazard refers to danger posed by the physical events during an eruption (or less likely, physical phenomena on the volcano not directly associated with an eruption, such as landslides). Hazard should not be confused with risk, which comprises probability of hazard and consequences of events on people, infrastructure, buildings, and economic activity. In this preliminary hazard assessment, observations of historical eruptions and interpretation of the geologic and stratigraphic records enable us to make informed statements about the probable nature and magnitude of future volcanic events. We first describe the physical character of Gareloi Volcano, followed by a brief geologic history. We later present the individual hazards that occur at the volcano.
