Donor apheresis is the selective collection of blood cells and/or plasma components in the same donor by means of a cell separator. The Societa Italiana di Emaferesi e Manipolazione cellulare (SIdEM), in collaboration with the Centro Nazionale Sangue (CNS, National Blood Centre), has carried out a detailed survey on donor apheresis in Italy in 2006. Donations by apheresis were performed by 79.4% of the responding transfusion services by using 1,351 cell separators. Apheretic procedures were 424,434 (78% plasmapheresis, 3% plateletpheresis, 19% multicomponent apheresis) equivalent to 15% of all donations. Donations by apheresis were 7.2 per 1,000 inhabitants and 314 per cell separator. Most of the apheresis activity was carried out in Northern Italy, as a consequence of its wider diffusion and a larger amount of donations, as well as of productivity level of cell separators, in this geographical area.
