The purpose of the report is to examine the interface between comparative effectiveness research and personalized medicine to help bring science and public demand into greater alignment. To discuss the generation and application of evidence effectively in both policy and practice to ensure such an alignment. ECRI Institute and six cosponsors, including AHRQ, organized a conference to explore: how clinical decision making can be illuminated with whole genome sequencing; what evidence is needed to conduct comparative effectiveness research in personalized medicine; how comparative effectiveness research can tailor medicine to the individual; how research is leveraging new tools on the scientific frontier; what impact comparative effectiveness and personalized medicine will have on venture capital investors in medical therapies and technology; what challenges regulators face in addressing comparative effectiveness research and personalized medicine in drug and medical device evaluation; how comparative effectiveness research and personalized medicine is put into practice in hospitals; how comparative effectiveness research and personalized medicine may influence what Medicare and private payers will reimburse; how comparative effectiveness research can be enhanced with personalized data in large healthcare systems; what clinical exemplars of personalized medicine are ongoing in comparative effectiveness research; what societal implications exist with comparative effectiveness research and personalized medicine.
