Final Report on Cold Test on CD 850-4B and CD 500-3 Transmissions in the Base, Florida. First Report on Project 251-036-10

The vehicles used in this test were a Howitzer, 8-Inch, Self-Propelled T108 (equipped with a CD 850-4B transmission) and a Tank, 96mm Gun, T42 (equipped with a CD 500-3 transmission). In the test setup, the vehicles were placed with the front of the T108 to the back of the TU2 with an adjust¬able brace between them to provide rigidity. The sprockets were coupled together with lengths of track. With this arrangement it was possible to motor either transmission by operating the other vehicle in order to simulate a towed condition.nBoth test transmissions, CD 850-4B Serial Bo. 15182 and CD 500-3 Serial No. 613, were torn down and inspected at Aberdeen Proving Ground prior to and after test operations.nThe CD 850-4B transmission was operated in a simulated towed condition for 6l hours, equivalent to 262 miles. The CD 500-3 transmission wa6 oper-ated in a simulated towed condition for 44 hours, equivalent to 178 miles.nTesting was stopped when dangerous temperatures were reached during the test cycle. There were no disabling failures in either transmission during this test.nThis test was conducted at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Facilities there were of sufficient capacity to accommodate the vehicles at temperatures between 70°F. and -65°F.
