A sharp maximum in the wind speed profile below 3.000 it is frequently observed at night. The maximum is usually at the top of the nocturnal inversion, is supergeostrophic, and is often, associated with extremely large values of wind shear at low levels. In the first paper of this report, it is shown that the characteristic velocity profile tends to promote an orderly growth of the nocturnal inversion. It is suggested that an inertia oscillation is induced when the constraint imposed by the daytime mixing is released by the initiation of an inversion' at about the time of sunset.nIn the second paper an analysis is made of the distribution of stress and eddy viscosity over O’Neill, Neb., during the period from 0430 CST, 31 August, to 0835 CST, 1 September 1953.
