Demonstration of Four Intensities of Management in Northern Hardwoods.

More than 10 million acres of land in New England are classified as northern hardwood forests. The increasing importance of these beech-birch-maple forests to the economy of the region emphasizes the need for better guides to good management of northern hardwood forests. High quality northern hardwoods, particularly sugar maple and yellow birch, have always been in some demand in the Northeast for furniture and specialty products. Today there is and increased demand for all species of hardwoods; and the demand for large, high-quality logs often exceeds that for softwoods. It is this increased demand that has led to the present problems in old-growth northern hardwoods. Increased demand has forced the region to face the task of rehabilitating these long-neglected forests and stepping up their production in both quantity and quality.
