Split-Tensile Strength of Lime-Stabilized Soils

The paper presents the principles of the split test (a diametral compression test for determining tensile strength), an evaluation of the test, and the application of the test procedure to lime-soil mixtures. Split-tensile and compressive strength test results are given for 11 soils. The results show that lime-soil mixtures develop substantial tensile strength and that the split-tensile strength is closely correlated with unconfined compressive strength. Factors such as soil type, lime treatment, and length of curing period influence the magnitude of the split-tensile and compressive strengths, but do not affect the ratio between the strengths. The investigation clearly indicates that the split test has considerable merit as a test procedure for evaluating the tensile strength properties of lime-soil mixtures. (Author)
