News and Views of This Kiln Drying Business: Presurfacing Green Oak Lumber to Reduce Surface Checking

The experiment can be interpreted to mean that presurfacing green northern red oak will: (1) minimize surface checking during initial drying when the drying potential is fairly severe; (2) reduce honeycomb due to the penetration and extension of surface checks; and (3) produce a more uniformly dried product in a shorter drying period. Thus, presurfacing of surface-check-prone woods should be given consideration when checkfree lumber is needed for product processing. (Author)
