The effect of varying the main operating parameters in turn, on the geometry of the resulting melt runs at otherwise constant working conditions, is examined for a Hamilton Standard high voltage electron beam welding machine. From macrosections, relation¬ships are obtained between the relative depth of pene¬tration in 1/2 in. thick En 58J stainless steel and the accelerating voltage, beam current, welding speed and particularly focus current.nFurther data on beam characteristics are obtained by deflecting the electron beam in a circular path at 60 c/sec over a tungsten probe, which thereby collects sharp pulses of current.
