Projection of Applications and National Benefits of a New Rapid Excavation Technology

An 8-week study was sponsored by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to meet the need to provide a basis for interagency planning and program coordination on rapid excavation technology. Specific results required of the study were: Projections of requirements for excavation, by time period, over the years 1968-1990; Estimates of the benefits expected to accrue from rapid excavation technology developments to meet those requirements. The specific applications of rapid excavation technology considered are limited to those underground excavation projects (e.g., tunneling) which do not disturb the overlying surface except at the excavation portal or for permanent access to the completed underground facility.
