An Application of Scattered Light Photoelasticity to Dynamic Stress Analysis

An experimental investigation was made of a three-dimensional dynamic stress analysis problem using scattered light photoelasticity. The light source is a ruby laser which has a light pulse of 0.175 microseconds duration. The stress waves are effectively 'stopped' photographically with the 0.175 microsecond light pulse. The laser has sufficient intensity so that dynamic scattered light fringe photographs are obtainable even though only a small percentage of the light is scattered. The problem investigated is a semi-infinite space, experimentally represented by a large solid cylinder, with a dynamic point load applied at the top surface. The dynamic point load is created by a small explosive charge. The differences in principal stresses are found along a line directly below the load point. (Author)
