STANDARDIZATION OF PICORNAVIRUS IMMUNE SERA.

Serum neutralization (SN) breakthrough tests for purity were run on two lots of echovirus type 12and one of coxsackievirus type A9. The results indicated the purity of all three lots,but in the case of one lot of echovirus type 12and the coxsackievirus type A9,the SN breakthrough test appeared to have selected a virus population less readily neutralizable by homotypic immune serum than the original virus stock. SN breakthrough tests were performed in suckling mice on coxsackievirus types A1, A5, A6, A19and A22and Turlock virus. The type A1virus was found to be contaminated with coxsackievirus type A5,but the other lots were free from contaminants propagable in suckling mice. Heterotypic neutralization tests for the group A coxsackieviruses propagable in cell cultures were performed on immune sera to echovirus type 33and coxsackievirus type A19. No heterotypic reactivity was seen with either serum. 'Intersecting pools'of enterovirus immune sera prepared in horses were assayed for homotypic and heterotypic neutralizing activity for certain echoviruses. The pools neutralized high concentrations of homotypic viruses,but in some instances heterotypic neutralizing activity was also seen. Immune sera to respiratory syncytial (RS) virus and parainfluenza type 3virus were examined in block complement fixation titrations. The RS serum was somewhat anticomplementary and reacted with uninfected host antigen to a fairly high titer,masking specific reactivity with the RS antigen. The parainfluenza type 3antigen had a titer of 1:32to 1:64with the specific antigen and showed no anticomplementary or anti-host reactivity. (Author)
