The Mean Circulation, Synoptic Disturbances and Rainfall Patterns over South Florida and Adjacent Areas in May 1968

A meteorological study is presented for South Florida and adjacent areas for the month of May 1968, with particular emphasis on the May 15-31 period. The motivation for this study is the ESSA Experimental Meteorology Branch cloud seeding experiments over South Florida during the second half of May, 1968. Several circulation and rainfall patterns are thoroughly discussed. It is found that the highly disturbed weather conditions over South Florida in May, 1968 - especially during the last third of that month were associated with specific large-scale features which acted not only as rain-producing systems but also as invigorating mechanisms for the convective cycle over large land masses.
