A fast and accurate chemical technique was developed for the trace analysis of silver in water. The method is an aid in evaluating the effectiveness of Agl cloud seeding material by measuring the concentration of Ag in the resulting atmospheric precipitation. The analysis can be performed near the precipitation collection site and would eliminate the cost of freezing and shipping samples. Subnanogram quantities of silver are extracted from water by a solvent-extraction technique using an organic-complexing agent. The silver content is determined by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a microsampling boat accessory. The procedure can determine Ag in concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion with an error in reproducibility within 5 percent. (Author)
