On the Prediction of Extreme Wind Speeds from the Parent Distribution.

The paper examines the application of Rice's crossing rate equation to the determination of extreme wind speeds. Using wind speed data from the Bureau of Meteorology's Observatory Hill Station,Sydney,the parameters required for the application of Rice's equation were established. In the course of evaluating these parameters the long term spectrum of wind speed was determined. Extreme speeds given by Rice's formula are compared with those determined by methods proposed by Gumbel and by Davenport. The effect of seasonal variations in the wind speed distribution is examined.
