Program to Develop an Improved Capillary Membrane Dialyzer.

Two capillary dialyzer designs both based on dialysate crossflow have been developed and clinically tested. On the more promising one,dialysate velocity is maintained by a series of alternating baffles forming compartments containing the capillaries. This device functions effectively at a once through dialysate flow rate of 500ml/min. Clinical tests show the baffled,crossflow dialyzer to have a urea clearance of 150ml/min, a creatinine clearance of 110ml/min, a uric acid clearance of 100ml/min and a phosphate clearance of 65ml/min at a blood flow rate of 200ml/min and a dialysate flow rate of 500ml/min. Ultrafiltration is in the range 1.1-1.4ml/min-sq m-100mmHg. Fourteen patients participated in this program and received more than 250 dialyses. All patients have responded well.
