Open Cycle Coal Burning MHD Power Generation. An Assessment and a Plan for Action.

A detailed assessment of coal-fired MHD power generation consitutes the core of this report,followed by a brief appraisal of the available resources. A model of an overall program for the development of MHD power generation is put forward. The objective of the program is to develop large scale base load coal-fired power plants (with clean stack gas emission) for use in the 1980-2000period,with thermal efficiencies equal or in excess of 50%. A 9-year $108million research and development program,culminating in a 300-thermal megawatt pilot plant is recommended. Report covers decision analysis as a tool to be used as the development program proceeds.
