Recommendations for the Prevention of Lead Poisoning in Children.

The report addresses three questions:Given the fact that some children eat paint,what is a safe level of lead in paint. What dose of lead is sufficient to produce adverse effects. What is the estimated daily intake of lead in a child with pica for paint. The report responds to these questions in detail and reaches several conclusions,including:Blood lead concentration in excess of 30micrograms lead/dl produces the first evident metabolic effects in children. Absorption of 4.5micrograms/kg per day is associated with blood lead concentration of 20micrograms/dl,the level in essentially normal children. In order to prevent future childhood lead poisoning from paint ingestion,there should be no lead added to paint. Thus a safe level of lead in paint is considered to be 0.06% by dry weight. In order to prevent present childhood lead poisoning from paint pica,it is strongly recommended that methods be developed for removal of old lead paint in a manner safe for occupants and workmen removing the paint. Lead is also absorbed from other sources than paint.
