A Preliminary Study of Natural Construction Materials on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

This study consisted of a preliminary geological and engineering evaluation of natural brick and cement materials on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Analyses of literature,maps,and aerial photos indicated that the Kingshill marl should be investigated as a source of cement and the Jealousy formation and Quaternary alluvium as a source for bricks. Geological field work and sampling were conducted at these sites. Samples were returned to the WES labs for mechanical,chemical,mineralogical,and Atterberg limits tests. Results indicate that the marl is suitable for cement and the Jealousy clay and alluvium can be successfully used for brick manufacture. The vertical and horizontal variability of these materials is not known and must be determined.
