General Instability of Infinitely Long Trapezoidally Corrugated Plates Under Shear.

The usual method of estimating buckling loads of corrugated plates is to replace the corrugated plate by a supposedly equivalent orthotropic plate and then make a standard type of flat-plate buckling analysis. In order to assess the accuracy of this method,as well as to obtain useful engineering data,in the present paper shear buckling loads are calculated by a more refined approach for a family of trapezoidally corrugated plates that are infinitely long in the direction of the corrugations. The more refined approach regards the trapezoidally corrugated plate as a non-planar assemblage of flat plates and employs the stationary total-potential-energy principle. The results show that orthotropic plate theory can greatly underestimate the buckling strength in the case of narrow plates, i.e.,plates that are two or three corrugations wide. The error diminishes as the number of corrugations increases but is still significant for plates that are five or more corrugations wide.
