Internal quality control (IQC) is a powerful tool available to analytical laboratories for monitoring the quality of analytical performance, documenting their level of quality and identifying preventive actions and strategies for continuous improvement. In this handbook the principles of IQC are presented simply and clearly. Detailed guidance is given about how to plan and implement a fit for purpose IQC programme, describing which types of control samples should be used and when and how to implement two simple control charts (the average chart, or X-chart, and the range chart, or R-chart) which have proven most useful in everyday laboratory work. In particular, guidance is given on how to establish the central line and the control limits, both when they are based on statistical principles or on stated requirements for the quality of the analytical results. Several practical examples, mainly from environmental analysis, are also presented.
