Excess Fishpond Nutrient Removal and Utilization by Waterchestnut Culture.

The effects of Chinese waterchestnut (Eleocharis dulcis) on production of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and resulting water quality were studied in 1974and 1975in .04-hectare earthen ponds at Clemson University. Ponds containing Chinese waterchestnut in 1975had significantly lower levels of nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen. These lower nutrient levels appeared to have resulted in lower phytoplankton levels in these ponds.
