Deformation-mechanism maps for metals and alloys

The various mechanisms by which crystalline solids deform plastically were investigated and deformation-mechanism diagrams or maps showing the field of stress, temperature and strain-rate over which each mechanism is dominant were constructed for some 40 pure metals, alloys and ceramics. The maps were constructed from experimental data and fitted to model-based rate-equations which described the mechanisms. Further developments (including transient behaviour, influence of pressure, behaviour at very low and very high strain rates) and the problem of scaling laws were studied and the use of the maps demonstrated by a number of simple case studies. The materials investigated were divided into isomechanical groups to give information about materials not analysed in the project. The described technique of constructing deformation-mechanism maps is applicable to other materials.
