Viral surveillance of 30 specimens/week for 2 pediatric offices detected outbreaks of influenza and RSV. Studies involving RSV were performed in 15 normal adults to determine duration of immunity; a prospective study of infants with congenital heart disease was initiated to determine if they were at increased risk for severe RSV infection; a similar study in immunosuppressed children and corticosteroid-treated children was conducted; comparative study of the effectiveness of gowns and masks vs. handwashing alone in preventing transmission of RSV was undertaken. An indirect immunofluorescent test for detection of RSV in infant nasal swabs was compared to viral isolation techniques. Influenza A/Peking/2/79 H3N2 CR-44 cold adapted virus was administered undiluted, and at 1:2 and 1:10 dilutions to healthy young volunteers. A comparative study of protective efficacy of ts and live attenuated H1N1 vaccines was carried out and further studies were performed with CR-35. A/California/10/78 H1N1 CR-37 Clone 1 was administered to 8 subjects at a 1:10 dilution. A comparative study of a new subunit influenza vaccine with conventional vaccine in 98 elderly residents of a nursing home was done and the responses were similar.
