摘要

Designed to help communities plan their first urban fair, this guide describes 10 successful urban fairs and then discusses elements that must be considered in planning and staging a new fair. The descriptions of individual fairs cover their history, major components, logistics, funding, promotional activities, and accomplishments. These fairs were held in Baltimore, Md.; Petersburg, Va.; San Antonio, Tex.; Ithaca, N.Y.; Austin, Tex.; Sioux City, Iowa; Knoxville, Tenn.; Dayton, Ohio; Minneapolis, Minn.; and Gilroy, Calif. Suggestions for planning an urban fair first address locating persons or organizations who would be willing to plan and direct the festival and then focus on organizational structure. The section on planning considers theme selection, income sources, selecting a date, and site preparation. Programming ideas include street parades, river parades, music, other entertainment and exhibits, fireworks, athletic events, beauty pageants, food, arts and crafts, and carnivals. The guide also examines arrangements for security, trash, parking, electricity, water, toilet facilities, and first aid. Finally, it reviews the needs of special audiences such as children and the handicapped as well as promotional and evaluation activities. A timeline for scheduling purposes, an organization chart, and an index are provided.
