Health Status and Health Services Utilization in Job Corps

This report presents the results of a one-year prospective study of the health status and health services utilization of enrollees at 8 job Corps centers. A total of 2,211 health examination records and approximately 26,000 health encounter records are reviewed. Young people entering job Corps, as revealed by examination and confirmed by utilization patterns, are generally healthy individuals. However, because corpsmembers are recruited from among disadvantaged youth, they manifest problems stemming from poor nutrition and poor hygiene: obesity, deficiency anemia, fungal and insect infestations, and sexually transmitted disease. Conditions found to be particularly prevalent among the corpsmember and/or particularly related to their future employability are emphasized in the analysis.
