Gulf Coast Tuna Resource Survey - April 1 to August 12, 1982: F/V (Fishing/Vessel) PROVIDENCE

Many United States fishing vessels, in particular shrimp trawlers and small tuna boats, have been forced out of foreign fisheries and have encountered, or are now facing, financial difficulties. Alternate opportunities need to be developed for these vessels. The tuna resources which seasonally inhabit the coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico may provide the opportunity to develop alternative operations. A vessel designed for commercial tuna bait fishing, and crewed by experienced tuna fishermen, was required to assess the potential of these resources and whether they could be taken in quantities large enough to make such a venture economically feasible.
