Economic Impact Analysis of Pollution Control Technologies for Segments of the Inorganic Chemicals Manufacturing Industry

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued effluent guidelines and limitations for the Inorganic Chemicals Manufacturing Industry in July 1982. This report estimates the economic impact of pollution control costs in terms of price changes, effects on profitability, potential plant closures, unemployment, and other secondary effects. A model plant approach is used to assess these impacts for ten chemical subcategories. In nine of the ten subcategories, impacts are minimal. For plants in the chrome pigments subcategory, price and profitability impacts are significant and production line closures are possible.
