Life Satisfaction in Old Age: Secondary Analysis

The nature, structure and conditions affecting life satisfaction in older age and how it develops throughout the life cycle were studied. Data analysis of several national surveys was conducted. Economic situation and children were viewed as important sources of well-being and happiness by all age groups; however, older people differed from other age groups in that they were more likely to cite health as a source of happiness, unhappiness and worries. In addition, individuals from 24-74 years of age cited residential environment and spare time activities, family and friends. A significant finding was that the dynamics of subjective well-being and its determinants seem rather stable across age levels. These findings are consistent with others reported in the literature.
