In 2011, as in the previous years, the young researchers of the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (Italian National Institute of Health) organized a series of Department seminars. The seminars, were intended to promote knowledge, both within and outside the Department, on some of the activities of the Department, to provide a forum for debate and discussion and to represent, especially for PhD students, an opportunity of training in communication of research results. The topics covered in the seminars included the mechanisms of virulence and plasticity of micro-organisms (including the acquisition of drug resistance), the surveillance and epidemiology of gastro-intestinal diseases and botulism, the evaluation of antibacterial activity of bacteriocins against food-borne pathogens, the state of the art on genetically modified organisms (GMO) and the risk assessment of nanomaterials in food. This heterogeneity is indicative of the range of issues of research and intervention addressed by the Department. The quality of the seminars demonstrates the competence and expertise of the researchers who are especially acknowledged for their efforts in the achievement of this initiative.
