摘要

Current Native American concerns for religious and cultural values are assessed within the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Area of Las Animas county, Colorado. Ethnohistorical documentation and field ethnography are used to address specific concerns, areas, and activities. For purposes of Army land management, prior use of the study area by several native groups can be expected. While the study area is peripheral to the core areas of these groups, it is relevant to the history of peoples such as Southern Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, Cheyenne/Arapaho, Comanche, Kiowa, Kiowa-Apache, and Jicarilla. Religious/cultural features of concern are encampments and dwellings, big game kill and hunting sites, war rituals, man and supernatural, disposal of the dead, horticulture, ethnobotany, and quarrying.
