Impact of Computerized Automation on Automobile Factories

This research inquires into the changes occurring in American auto factories as the result of the introduction of computerized automation. Data were collected in two assembly plants and one engine factory using a twenty-four page structured questionnaire. Three comprehensive questions were posed and answered. What has been the impact on the flexibility of the production process. Flexibility was found to be multi-dimensional with some aspects increasing while others decreased. What kind of work organization has accompanied computerization. Work organization showed virtually no changes from that for conventional processes. What changes have occurred in manufacturing effectiveness criteria. They were expected to increase across the board in the engine plant but results were mixed for the assembly plants.
