Genetic Engineering of Plants: Agricultural Research Opportunities and Policy Concerns

Discussions that occurred at the convocation on the genetic engineering of plants are summarized. Some of the ways that genetic engineering may be used to address agricultural problems are addressed. For example, researchers are attempting to develop herbicide-resistant plants and plants less susceptible to environmental stresses, such as drought, salty soils, or climatic extremes. The changes necessary in research funding and training to achieve this potential are enumerated. It is suggested that agricultural scientists receive training in molecular biology and that molecular biologists receive training in agronomy so that they will be able to communicate. The need for university-industry relations is emphasized, although it is pointed out that corporate funds cannot make up for any shortfall in federal support for university research.
