Information Synthesis: Effectiveness of Nurse Practitioners. Volume 1. Technical Report

摘要

A literature search from 1963 to Spring of 1983 was conducted and findings were used to form the following conclusions: (1) Nurse Practitioners (NPs) have been utilized in a variety of practice settings especially ambulatory care and MD private offices; (2) NPs have performed a comprehensive range of activities that were both expanded nursing practice and physician substitute oriented; (3) when NPs were compared to other providers, they were typically equal and occasionally superior in performance to other providers; (4) NPs have had a positive influence on patient-related outcomes, accessibility to health care, reduced hospitalization rates and increased patient/employer satisfaction; (5) NP influence on health care costs have yet to be clarified because results were both positive and negative.
