Currently, no nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method exists which can define the strength of individual structural wood members with the necessary reliability. The research program was directed at evaluating the feasibility of utilizing a sonic wave NDE method to provide for cost-efficient, reliable determination of the strength of individual wood beams. A five-fold plan was adopted: (1) development of a preliminary model using NDE and destructive test data to predict the bending strength of wood beams; (2) development of a practical field test that allowed the collection of quality NDE data; (3) collection of NDE data from Douglas-fir joists in-situ and in the laboratory; (4) development of models to predict the bending strength of the joists; and (5) preliminary evaluation of the effects of in-situ conditions by comparison of NDE models based on in-situ and laboratory data. The results verified the validity of the sonic wave NDE approach.
